Curriculum for Wales ~ Curriculum Statement

Everything we do at Llangiwg Primary School and all the activities and experiences that our pupils undertake are called our curriculum.

Senior leaders, staff, pupils, parents and carers have worked collaboratively to develop a shared vision for the curriculum and are developing a shared understanding of progression at Llangiwg Primary School.

The school’s curriculum meets the required elements as set out in the national framework. It is focused on ensuring that pupils develop the four purposes of being Ambitious Capable Learners; Enterprising Creative Contributors; Ethical and Informed Citizens and Healthy Confident Individuals.

The curriculum at our school is progressive and will ensure pupils develop control and independence in their development of their literacy, numeracy, digital and integral skills in addition to ensuring pupils engage with increasingly complex and sophisticated content to progress their knowledge and understanding.

Learners will develop an understanding of all What Matters statements as part of the school’s curriculum. The process of exploring and revisiting these statements will enable our learners to develop ever deeper knowledge over their learning continuum and to progress to a more sophisticated understanding of the key knowledge, ideas and principles in each Area of Learning and Experience.

Termly Concepts at Llangiwg Primary School

Our termly Concepts are co-constructed by staff and pupils and take into account local knowledge and experiences. Pupils have an opportunity to take learning in a direction that is of interest to them and enables coverage of the Areas of Learning & Experience.

Assessment & Progression at Llangiwg Primary School

Assessment at Llangiwg Primary has three main roles in enabling learner progression:

• It supports individual learners on an ongoing, day-to-day basis through verbal and written feedback.

• It identifies, captures and reflects on individual learner progress over time through termly assessments, in addition to assessment and monitoring of progress against the progression steps.

• It considers group progress in order for staff to reflect on their practice through regular pupil progress meetings, lessons observations, book/ work scrutiny and listening to learner.

Assessment at our school enables learner progression as it is focused on supporting learners to move forward with their learning on a day-to-day basis and identifying, capturing and reflecting on learners’ progress over time. The school’s curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring that pupils develop an integrated, cross-disciplinary approach to learning and ensures learners make meaningful links across the six Areas of Learning and Experience. This enables learners to build connections across their learning and combine different experiences, knowledge and skills.

Assessment at Llangiwg Primary School focuses on identifying individual pupil’s strengths, achievements and areas for improvement. This involves identifying pupils’ next steps alongside learners to move learning forward. We feel it is important to understand how learners learn, as well as what they have learned and can demonstrate. Pupils are encouraged to use Assessment for Learning strategies to develop their critical thinking and as a result develop integral skills that are key to developing lifelong learners. Assessment informs parents and carers of pupil progress through a written Spring school report in addition to the opportunity to meet with class teachers 1:1 during the Autumn and Summer terms. Parents and carers are also given the opportunity to discuss their children’s work with the pupils as part of termly open afternoons.

Pupils in Years 2 to 6 carry out personalised assessments in the Summer term and this information is used as part of our wider assessment arrangements and are designed to help pupils, parents and teaching staff understand how learner’s reading and numeracy skills are developing and their next steps in learning.

Staff and governors at Llangiwg Primary School are committed to ensuring a shared understanding of progression amongst all stakeholders through regular consultation and review of the curriculum we deliver, therefore feeding into our curriculum and assessment design, planning and self-evaluation and improvement process.

The school will monitor the impact of its curriculum on pupils’ progression and their development of the four purposes on a continuous basis throughout the academic year and complete a formal review on an annual basis.

Our curriculum is designed to develop in our pupils a sense of belonging, not just in a physical or geographical sense but also the historic, cultural and social place which has shaped and continues to shape the community which our school inhabits. We aim to help our pupils make sense of their own identities and those of others, in our community, Wales and the across the world. Learner Concepts will change and be adapted over time to reflect the pace and change of the society in which we live.

We feel that communicating effectively with our parents and carers is very important to foster positive relationships. At Llangiwg Primary School, we believe strong links with our parents and carers ensures pupil progress and creates a bridge between school and home.
